tone indicators
what are tone indicators?
tone indicators, also known as tone tags, are short abbreviations that follow a slash symbol, also known as the / symbol, usually at the end of a sentence or message. tone indicators help convey tone, or the felling/mood you are expressing to the reader. tone indicators can also make the meaning behind the statement clear, as different tones can give the same statement different meanings.
why do we use them?
tone isn't always the easiest to understand, especially for neurodivergent people. the lack of indicators such as body language, facial expression, being able to hear the person's voice, etc., can make it especially difficult to decipher the intended tone of words on a screen. additionally, some people may struggle to understand tone in face-to-face conversations, which makes understanding the tone of a message all the harder. while not all neurodivergent people struggle with tone, and while not all neurotypical people pick up on tone easily, one of the main purposes of tone indicators is to confirm the tone of the statement.additionally, tone indicators can help avoid misunderstandings. the same statement in different tones can have drastically different meanings. without a clearly stated tone, it is easy for a message to be misinterpreted. hence, indicating the tone can help in avoiding these misunderstandings.
please note :
using multiple tone indicator on one message is okay, however it should be kept to a relatively low number. most messages only require one or two tone indicators to get the desired tone across.it's okay if you can't remember all of the tone indicators. there are a lot of them. additionally, don't be afraid to ask what a tone indicator means. someone will provide an answer, and if not, there are multiple search results in which you may be able to find its meaning.you are not required to use tone indicators. though tone indicators provide benefits, you are not in the wrong for not using them. however, be respectful of those who do use them, and who require them. if someone asks you for the tone of the statement you made, provide them an answer. if you see someone using tone indicators, don't shame or insult them.building off of the previous statement, do not misuse tone indicators on purpose. this is incredible deceiving and can lead to negative repercussions. not to mention, it in incredible rude.in short, do as you wish, but be respectful.
